Choose the Right Colosseum Ticket for Your Visit

Check the sites included in your booking

The Colosseum is often visited as part of the larger archaeological area that includes the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Many tickets cover all three sites, but it is still worth confirming the exact places named in your chosen option, especially when comparing a general entry ticket with a specialist tour.

Mamertine Prison is included with one entry-and-audio-guide format, making it a distinct choice for travellers who want to add this historic site to their Ancient Rome itinerary. It is not simply another version of standard Colosseum entry: check that the prison is specifically part of the booking if it is important to your plans.

Understand the type of commentary

An audio guide and a live guide create different visiting experiences. With an audio guide, you explore independently and can move through the sites at your own pace. A multimedia-video option offers an introduction to Ancient Rome before the visit rather than commentary throughout the route.

A live guided tour follows a structured visit with commentary from a guide. Some tours are described as guided walking tours, while others are organised for small groups. If you specifically want a smaller-group format, choose an option that states this clearly rather than assuming that every guided tour has a limited group size.

Plan carefully for multi-site combinations

A Vatican and Colosseum combination is designed for travellers who want to visit both major Rome areas under one booking. These options include the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, but the visit format varies. Some include guided visits, while another combines entry with a multimedia presentation instead.

For the multimedia Vatican combination, guided tours, Arena Floor access, Underground access, and transport between the attractions are not part of the booking. This makes it important to plan the movement between the Vatican and the Colosseum separately. If you want guidance at both locations, choose a combination that explicitly includes a live guide.

If your Rome itinerary also includes other central landmarks, consider planning separate visits to the Pantheon or the Castel Sant'Angelo around your chosen Colosseum time.

Before you book

• Confirm the access area: Arena Floor admission must be stated if you want to visit that level.
• Check the visiting format: audio guides, multimedia presentations, and live guides are different types of support.
• Review the named sites: verify whether your booking covers the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, or an additional site such as Mamertine Prison.
• Check combination logistics: for Vatican combinations, confirm whether the visits are guided and whether transport between attractions is arranged.
• Choose a small-group tour deliberately: select a ticket specifically described as a small-group visit if that format is important to you.

Colosseum ticket prices: what should you compare?

Independent entry, Arena guided tour and Vatican and Colosseum tour do not include the same access, guidance or extras. Compare the current price shown for your date only after checking what each option covers.

A lower-priced ticket is not automatically better value if it excludes an area, guided visit or added experience that matters to you.

If you are planning more sightseeing in Rome, you can also compare St. Peter's Basilica tickets before finalising your schedule.
